Ever read an article or seen something on the media that has prompted you to put pen to paper, or fingertips to keyboard?

You’ve maybe mulled it over, questioned if it’s a good idea to send or not, but in the end, after sleeping on it, you hit ‘Send’ – and wait to see what happens.

Will it disappear into the ether? Will it make its mark? Will it provoke a backlash?

Still in your heart of hearts you feel it’s worth doing.

My letter to The Lady

The Lady is a glossy magazine I love and I read every issue for its fantastic retro appeal.

It has class, elegance, style, and great coverage of the arts.

The British Royals frequently feature and a recent issue had a long feature on Queen Camilla and King Charles and their relationship.

It was all written in glowing rose-pink terms and you can’t help wondering what the late Queen, Princess Diana, or her sons, would have felt about the way the story was presented.

If you’re a woman (or man) who’s had to go through the pain of divorce because of two other people’s infidelity you are deeply aware of all that has gone on behind the outward façade.

Not a rant, more a reminder

So I wrote a letter to The Lady in response. I tried to get the balance right, saying in effect:

I have great respect for both the King and Queen as individuals in their hard work and dedication to service, but...

Deep-down any person with half a conscience knows that, and Charles and Camilla both strike me as conscientious people.

The Lady published my letter.

I was grateful as I felt I owed putting this down in black-and-white to all the faithful spouses out there who end up paying the price for someone else's behaviour.

I wish the King and Queen well. They have a hard job, and if they can support each other while they do it, I’m glad of that too.

Just let’s not see them as relationship role models and sweep the facts under the carpet because it’s too much like saying:

Public promises don’t matter. Commitment doesn’t matter. Other people don’t matter.

Oh, don't they?

This time last year I wrote Six good things about bad Christmases and it struck a chord with many people. So I've flagged it and linked to it again and that's got me thinking about the whole cult of New Year's Eve which I know can hang over us if we're feeling a bit sub-optimal, like a child knowing a dental appointment is coming up.
