P2YL | 28. Learning to dress for a happier me
How I upped my confidence through better clothes-choices

Where are you in your clothes journey?
Here’s me on mine:

Age 11: Our royal blue school uniform drained my skin of colour.
Age 19: The perm was a sign of me starting to experiment with my looks.
Age 21: To my eyes, and with what I know of ’80s fashion, this was the tipping point.
The giant leap in my style journey
In that photo, I’ve suddenly learnt to:
- emphasise the waist with a slim belt and pulling the T-shirt over the belt to give a slight peplum effect;
- wear looser, Japanese-style trousers to add shape to my virtually non-existent hips;
- had my hair cut and highlighted by a city salon;
- learnt the benefits of lightly tanned skin to even out skin-tone. (Though now I'm careful to wear SPF 50 on my face and hands.)
What brought about the change?
I’d spent a year in a cosmopolitan German city where, by keeping my eyes open, I’d absorbed some lessons on Eurochic.
Style and the experienced woman
Age 59: By now I’ve learnt that:
- red suits me;
- wrap dresses enhance my shape;
- a pendant enhances an otherwise bony neck and chest;
- flattering light can work wonders in photographs.
Conclusion: style is an eminently learnable skill which ups the odds in our favour.
Style is your helpful sister
Learning to improve my appearance through clothes has given me confidence, boosted my attractiveness, and definitely helped me when it came to relationships.
Asking my husband what drew him to me when we first met, he said, frankly: ‘I liked the look of you.’
Someone very important earlier on in my love-life said, out of the blue, very early on in our relationship, 'I love the way you dress.'
Of course it’s a woman's essence that a man falls in love with, not the mere outer shell, but your outer shell can cause someone to want to know more.
